Lancaster University
Being a transferred international student myself, I understand the confusion and struggle one has to go through when adapting to a new environment without friends or relatives around us. Therefore, I decided to reach out to the university to find out various avenues that I can use to help those who are going through the same! Here are some of the examples of how I did it:
- As a Peer Mentor, I was trained by University Officers from Student Wellbeing Services to be a mentor in the Peer Mentor Scheme. I had to Organise weekly meetings with mentees to provide them academic, social and emotional support. It was great having the opportunity to bond with these students with mild mental illnesses and being there for them, making them feel better, it warms my heart. Besides that, I also get to learn so much more about different mental illnesses and get to expose myself to them so I can be more sensitive when dealing with people struggling from mental illness in the future!
- As a Transitions Guide, I organise weekly meetings with all mentees to follow up with them and provide to provide full assistance in every aspect that they require help in, including academics, co-curricular and emotional support. For this role i was the guide to 5 first year students from China, basically acting as their guide and mentor to everything they want to know about university and help them settle down quickly. To support the transition of international students into studying in UK.
- As a Student Ambassador, I represent Lancaster University at various internal and external events to introduce the university to people from all walks of life. I was Involved in providing campus tours, leading open day events and career conventions. I enjoyed the campus tours the most, where we get to see highly enthusiastic and motivated freshers checking out university and walking them around my university to introduce the best parts of it to them!
